Magura forks could potentially kill you.

Magura is celebrating its Durin fork with the coolest recall ever!

Early adopters of Magura’s Durin Race suspension fork should take care to ensure their fork is not subject to a recall.  According to Magura:

During our ongoing and continuous Product Evaluation and Testing Process we have discovered that the initial production batch of our Durin Race 80/100 (MD 80R, MD 100R) Suspension Fork could potentially be faulty. This fault if present will affect the performance of the lower fork leg and in the minority of cases could potentially represent a risk to the user.

For this reason we are issuing a recall of the concerned suspension forks Durin Race 80/100 (MD 80R, MD 100R) in both disc only and canti/disc (for V-brakes) version. As a result of the potential risk to the user MAGURA recommends that affected units are no longer used as they may not be fit for the purpose intended!

Magura continues:

During the course of our product testing we have established that the affected units in the severest of circumstances could potentially fail causing the breakage of the lower leg of the Durin Race 80/100 and that this could eventually result in a crash and possible injury to the rider.

The recall issue initially manifests itself with a crack on the front fork arch between the horizontal and vertical portion of that arch. The fork remains rideable at this stage, because the 2nd rear arch acts as a stabilizer for the lower leg, but the fork will feel indirect with a reduction in steering precision and the front tire will rub on the inside of the fork legs. If the rider continues with the broken front arch, the breakage of the 2nd rear arch is inevitable and this could then result in a crash.

This post makes it official, there are more announcements of this recall than there are riders of Magura suspension forks.  Please be sure to inspect your fork, you are the last of a dying breed and Magura desperately needs you alive.

Of course it is difficult to tell how serious this recall is by Magura’s languge.  They say that forks only “could potentially” be subject to a problem.  If this is anything like the time I could potentially have hooked-up with six members of the ice-capades, I am sure that people have nothing to worry about.  Even if there is a problem Magura suggests it only may affect the performance of the fork leg for its intended purpose.  This should be little problem for Magura users; if they were concerned about performance why would they have bought a Magura fork?    On the other hand, when Germans call something “imminent” they tend to mean business.

The good news is that even if your lowers fail it should only affect their “intended purpose” leaving you with a bounty of beneficial uses for your Magura fork.  Even before the recall, I found my Magura fork a splendid hatrack.  For those who could potentially like to continue riding their forks, Magura is offering replacments via their  recall page.
